Kittens and Beer

There is a nice state park near my house and I’ve started scouting the area for when the leaves start changing and there is a lot of fall color. We got a few new (used) lenses today I went to this park and tested them out. The parking lot is next to a horse barn and a barn cat came up to us as we got out of the car. Cats are usually cliché but damn they're cute.

On a completely unrelated topic, for those out there looking for a good pumpkin ale this season, my favorite so far out of four I’ve tried is Screamin’ Pumpkin Spiced Ale from the Michigan Brewing Company. It has the most flavor thus far. And if you haven’t tired any pumpkin ale yet, do yourself a favor and pick up a six-pack.

know your rights

A read an interesting article today in the Entertainment section my morning peruse. The words liable and photographer were in the headline so I went on to read:

http://www.movies.msn.com/news/article.aspx?news=234883&GT1=7701

Now this is usually just trashy gossip kind of stuff until you get to the last article, which reads, “A law that took effect this year holds photographers who engage in criminal behavior to get a picture liable for three times the damages they cause, plus loss of any profits the published photo might generate.”

This came to a bit of a surprise to me b/c I wasn’t aware of such a law, unless it’s specific to California, but nonetheless I thought a quick review of legal rights for photographers would be a good idea.

Here are some links I found in a quick search that give some good insight:

mazda wheel

Fooling around in traffic on my way home from work.

liquorice

Fooling around in my dad’s herb garden with the 24mm @ f/1.4 last night and this was the best I could come up with before it started raining. There’s an ant on the licorice.

Tennis in blur

I get tired of shooting the same old things all the time. As soon as I knew I had the photos that I needed in the bag I started messing around. I was limited as to where I could go due to what I needed to capture, so I messed around with what I had, my camera, lens and light. I'm still trying to break away from putting sports on this blog, but for purposes of getting a photo up this is what I got yesterday.
Slow Shutter + Fast Action = Blur

in flight

I found that during my time in Alaska I was drawn to things in action. The bulk of my shooting for the last 3-4 years has been sports. So the natural progression from sports to Alaska is, naturally, birds. This is my favorite Black-Legged Kittiwake shot. It was taken on a half-foggy/half-sunny day on Resurrection Bay.

flip the lens

My friend in Chicago told me to flip my lens around and hold it up to the mount on my camera to give me a 1:1 ratio on my camera and a macro effect. This morning the light was nice and the roses outside my house had some dew or rain on them so I tried it and got this...

Goodbye Nikon

We have decided to make the full-out switch to Canon. I was photographing the pieces we are trying to sell for inquiry purposes. I got this nice tight shot set up with a single strobe. I then put it into Photoshop and made everything black and white except the only red that is on the camera.
I felt a little cannibalisitc cause I shot this with Nikon equipment. Oh well, see ya in my next life.
